Kitchen Remodel: "American Country"
 |
 |
 |
The following is a transcript from an article feature in Decor & Style Magazine, June 2000
This tri-level home had a very open design--except for the kitchen. "The kitchen
was cramped and closed in by a peninsula, which had cabinets hanging from
the ceiling," recalls designer Lisa Tapp Koska. |
This island serves as a gathering place, to prep food and entertain guests |
The counter space was inadequate and the cooktop was too small. The old layout was not conducive to entertaining, since the homeowners like to prepare food and
chat with their guests.

To enlarge the space, Tapp removed a bar, walk-in pantry, peninsula, and wall. She also moved appliances to maximize the efficiency.
A new island functions as a separate prep area as well as an ideal place for entertaining. "It is the gathering place for all of our company to sit and enjoy a glass of wine while we prepare food," says the homeowner, who is delighted with the transformation.

Honey-stained,
hand rubbed, glazed maple cabinets add warmth to the space, accentuating
the existing wood floors. "I promised her we'd have organized storage
for everything," says Tapp, who packed cabinets full of functional
storage features, including full-extension glides, tilt-outs, a pull-up
mixer shelf, spice racks, slide-out trash, custom drawer dividers and extra-deep
pot and pan drawers. The kitchen also has a wine glass storage cabinet,
custom cookbook cabinet, and a hanging iron pot rack to display cookware.
Asked what she likes best about her remodeled kitchen, the homeowner replies, "All
of it!"
